The new tag line for the W220 is “why use metal when plastic is cheaper and is guaranteed to fatigue with age?!”

In what universe does an engineer think its ok to make a regularly used part like the shift lock out of plastic!? And then doesn’t include a manual release for said shift lock for when it breaks! Which apparently it does in every W220 and C215, but of course by the grace of God has held on in my S600 for over 128,000 miles just to fail for little old me!

Now I have to get up on Wednesday morning and take the car back into a shop, and spend more money, to get the whole thing removed! No more shift lock! Tear it all out!

There’s an aluminum aftermarket solution to that problem. Looks like this, readily available, much cheaper than anything MBZ will sell you.

there’s nothing wrong with plastic, provided you use the right polymer and design the part correctly for the application. Sounds like the problem is more with the design of the part. teh googs shows me pics of broken ones which all seem to have snapped in about the same place.

An engineer won’t think it’s ok, but the beancounter will overrule the engineer.

THAT’S AN AWFULLY HEAVY CAR TO FOREGO A PARK LOCK IN. I WOULD HATE FOR IT TO ROLL OVER YOUR NEIGHBOR’S DOG. UNLESS IT’S A POMERANIAN.

BMW loves plastic parts too. Audi/VW as well.

You’d figure they could spring for the slightly more expensive and durable and just tack another few hundred dollars onto the price. At the price point of the S-Class, is anyone going to notice?

Agreed. But imagine “a few hundred” multiplied by hundreds of thousands (millions?) of these transmissions produced.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’d gladly pay a little more for a vehicle if it doesn’t have stupid cost cutting flaws like that.

Now it would be a good time to ditch the whole transmission and go manual. It shouldn’t be very hard...

I mean...way to rich for my blood, but a damn fine idea nontheless.

A manual V-12 S-Class sedan...the thought gets me all titillated.

I mean, I’m glad it’s just some little shit problem, but still...I guess I was allowing myself to start thinking about elective repairs like the PSE pump for the seat massage...

Big mistake. I just hope it isn’t very expensive to fix. $500 would be nice.

PSE is in my crosshairs at the moment. It's annoying not having door locks
